Experience Innovation Workshop

In April 2016, Nick Aronson, Managing Director – Institutional Banking and Markets, hosted a Crazy Might Work contingent at Commonwealth Bank Australia’s (CBA) New Innovation Lab. Idea incubation and acceleration that CBA have fostered across the organisation.

The innovation lab is a working laboratory for ideas that are originated by staff and partners and then incubated and accelerated in the ‘garage’. The tour itself is a fabulous curation of inventive products and services that have, or are, changing the face of banking in its various forms. Our favourite, somewhat ‘low tech’ invention was the CBA ‘Canapault’ – literally a tin containing an innovation manual and survival kit that is sent out to staff in the branches to help formulate and capture their creative ideas!

We had to tear ourselves away from our gracious hosts for the short walk to L’Aqua on Cockle Bay in order to experience IDEO’s market-leading innovation simulation. This highly interactive and engaging four-hour team session had execs working in small groups to learn and apply the IDEO’s design thinking framework and methodology to an actual IDEO project. The simulation compresses 16 weeks into 4 hours, so not for the fainthearted! Plenty of friendly competition and a lot of laughs along the way, but everyone walked away with some great insights and news practical innovation skills to apply within their organisation.
